Haydn Le Pescatrici

Bampton Classical Opera marks the 200th anniversary of Haydn's death with a new production of his 1770 comedy Le pescatrici

Monday, 9 March 2009

Following the performance at the Kammeroper, we trudged through the snow to what was once an outer suburb of the city, where Haydn bought a house in Gumpendorf (now Haydngasse).  Adding a second storey to a fairly modest dwelling, he lived here from 1797 until his death, composing both The Creation and The Seasons.  The house is run as a branch of Wien Museum, which operates a portfolio of composer-houses across the city.  A new and helpfully bilingual exhibition across the two floors has been created for this bicentenary year.  His highly successful sojourns in London are effectively evoked,  as are the minutiae of his daily life, finances, servants and visitors.  Visit www.wienmuseum.at/english/75.asp

We're one of the leading and most enterprising small UK opera companies, specialising in rarities of the late 18th century. We've given a number of fascinating UK premières and performed works by both familiar and unfamiliar composers. We regularly perform in two idyllic open-air venues at Bampton and Westonbirt, and also in London's famous St John's, Smith Square. Visit www.bamptonopera.org for the full story.
